The basics
Getting to know MessageGears
What is MessageGears?
MessageGears is a cross-channel marketing platform purpose-built for brands with millions of customers and complex marketing programs. It connects directly to your data source (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift, etc.) so enterprise teams can segment audiences, personalize content, and send campaigns across email, SMS, mobile push, in-app, web, and hundreds of other destinations, all without copying or syncing customer data into a separate system.
Leading B2C brands use MessageGears to activate their full customer dataset in real time, consolidating an expensive and siloed stack that traditionally required a separate CDP, ESP, mobile vendor, and reverse-ETL tool.
Who is MessageGears built for?
MessageGears is purpose-built for brands that send high message volumes, manage millions of customer records and attributes, and need real-time personalization to meet their customers’ expectations. It is most valuable to teams that have already invested in a single data source of truth like a modern cloud data warehouse. MessageGears is designed for teams that want to easily activate more of their data in marketing programs without the cost, latency, and governance overhead of traditional customer engagement tools.
Typical buyers include CRM and lifecycle marketing leaders, marketing technology/operations teams, and the data and IT teams that share responsibility for customer engagement infrastructure.
Is MessageGears a CDP, an ESP, or a marketing automation platform?
MessageGears is a cross-channel marketing platform with an advanced audience builder. It delivers capabilities that are normally spread across several tools:
- Composable CDP: Drag-and-drop visual segmentation canvas, SQL-powered audience building, and native reverse ETL activation directly against your warehouse, without a separate cloud database.
- ESP and cross-channel engagement: Owned email infrastructure plus SMS, mobile push, in-app, push-to-inbox, web push, and OTT delivery.
- Personalization and orchestration: Real-time content rendering, cross-channel journey orchestration, and AI/ML-driven decisioning with built-in predictive models.
Where is MessageGears headquartered?
MessageGears was founded and headquartered in Atlanta in 2010, and now has teams across the US, UK, Ireland, and Singapore supporting global enterprise customers. The company secured $62M in growth funding at the end of 2022, alongside the acquisition of mobile marketing leader Swrve, and has been named multiple times on the Inc. 5000 list of America's fastest-growing private companies.
Warehouse-native architecture
How “warehouse-native” actually works
Scale + ROI at a glance:
- 24x faster campaign production
- 50% less IT dependencies for marketers
- 60% savings on martech vendor fees
- 400%+ ROI within 3 years, proved by a Forrester study
What does “warehouse-native” mean?
Warehouse-native means MessageGears reads customer data directly in-place from your existing data warehouse rather than requiring you to copy it into a vendor-owned database. There is no hourly or nightly sync, no scheduled ingestion job, and no duplicated customer profile sitting inside a separate platform.
Marketers work from the same source of truth as all of their counterparts in data, IT, finance, etc., the data that’s already being managed and governed. This keeps audiences accurate, reduces operational overhead, and avoids the cost and risk of maintaining duplicate data pipelines and sources.
Does my customer data ever leave my warehouse?
Your customer data can stay securely inside your warehouse environment and behind your existing firewall. MessageGears queries the warehouse at the time of campaign execution and segmentation, so personally identifiable information does not need to be replicated into a separate vendor environment for owned activation channels. These channels, like email and SMS, are executed within MessageGears and without any data movement or duplication. Marketing teams can opt to send lists from MessageGears to external activation channels, like Meta or Google Ads.
This architecture materially reduces the data governance and compliance surface area compared with platforms that require customer data ingestion, particularly for enterprise teams operating under strict data residency, minimization, or audit requirements. In addition to the data management benefits, this approach allows marketing teams to access the full dataset and make more informed campaign decisions, as compared to standard SaaS marketing platforms which can only handle a fraction of the brand’s available customer data.
Which data sources does MessageGears support?
MessageGears can work from any centralized data source. Brands most commonly connect MessageGears directly to one of the major cloud data warehouses or lakehouses, but we integrate with a broad ecosystem of data partners:
- Snowflake (including native integration with Snowflake Cortex for AI-driven predictive scoring and personalization)
- Databricks (including native execution of Databricks ML models for intelligent segmentation and decisioning)
- Google BigQuery
- Amazon Redshift
- Teradata
- Microsoft Azure
- Microsoft SQL Server
- Amazon Athena
- Amazon DynamoDB
- AWS PostgreSQL
- MySQL
- Oracle
- Salesforce
- Apache Hadoop
- Rocket Vertica
- SingleStore
MessageGears is recognized as a Snowflake AI Data Cloud Products Partner, a Snowflake Modern Marketing Data Stack partner, a Validated Databricks Data and Technology Partner, and a Google Cloud Ready BigQuery Technology Partner.
Do I need to restructure my data or define a schema?
No. MessageGears is schema-flexible. It can adapt to your existing data structure rather than forcing you to reformat data into a predefined model. There are no field or attribution caps, and no requirement to flatten or restructure transactional or behavioral tables before activation. This significantly shortens implementation time for brands with complex or unconventional data models.
For brands that are early in their data journey or ready to make a change to their schema, MessageGears has multiple consulting partners that can assist.
How real-time is “real-time” in MessageGears?
Because MessageGears queries your warehouse directly at the moment of segmentation, personalization, or send, audience counts and personalization values reflect data as it exists right now, not data from the last sync window. MessageGears pulls the latest information right from your central source, so content like loyalty tier, product availability, or pricing reflects the most recent state.
Data + personalization
Segmentation, dynamic content, and predictive AI
How many customer attributes or fields can I personalize?
There is no limit on customer attributes or fields. Because MessageGears reads from your warehouse, every column in every table, customer profile, transactions, behavioral events, product catalog, store locations, coupons, loyalty data, is available for segmentation and personalization without a storage upcharge or sync penalty. This significantly increases personalization and context-rich experiences for customers.
What is FreeMarker, and does my team need to code?
FreeMarker is the open-source templating language MessageGears uses for advanced dynamic content and personalization. It is well-documented, widely used, and accessible to anyone comfortable with template logic.
Most day-to-day work doesn't require code. Marketers can build campaigns, audiences, and dynamic content through the visual UI, reusable content blocks, and no-code personalization tools. Technical users have the option to drop into FreeMarker for complex conditional logic, advanced rendering, or single-template-many-variants patterns.
Can I use AI and ML models to drive my campaigns?
Yes. MessageGears supports multiple AI/ML pathways:
- Snowflake Cortex: Call Cortex models for predictive scoring, generative copy, and AI-driven personalization directly from MessageGears campaigns.
- Databricks ML: Execute Databricks-native ML models for advanced segmentation and decisioning.
- MessageGears AI: Use built-in predictive models for send-time optimization, channel selection, and customer-level decisioning.
- BYO: Homegrown or third-party models are also supported.
The built-in MessageGears AI library covers several predictive models out of the box, like: time of day, next best channel, purchase propensity, customer lifetime value, churn propensity, second purchase, and engagement score. Because every model runs against your data in-place, predictions stay current and don't depend on a sync window.
Channels
Email, SMS, mobile, web, OTT, and more
What messaging channels does MessageGears support?
MessageGears supports a full suite of owned and third-party channels:
- Email (using MessageGears' own enterprise-grade MTAs and dedicated IPs)
- SMS
- Mobile push
- Mobile push-to-inbox
- Mobile in-app messaging (iOS, Android, React Native)
- Web push
- OTT and connected TV (including SDK support for Roku, Tizen, webOS, Huawei, and Amazon devices)
- Third-party destinations (Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, and dozens of other marketing ad and commerce platforms via reverse ETL-style activation)
Does MessageGears send email itself or use a third-party ESP?
MessageGears operates its own Message Transfer Agents (MTAs) and can provision dedicated sending IPs tailored to each customer. Email infrastructure is owned end-to-end, which gives MessageGears direct control over deliverability, throughput, and reputation rather than depending on a third-party email API.
This is a meaningful distinction for high-volume brands where email is a core channel and predictable performance at peak volume is non-negotiable.
What about mobile and web SDKs?
MessageGears' mobile capabilities include push, in-app messaging, and rich event-based triggers, expanded through the 2022 acquisition of Swrve. SDKs are available for iOS, Android, React Native, and a broad set of OTT platforms (Roku, Tizen, webOS, Huawei, Amazon), so brands can extend engagement across modern devices without bolting on a separate channel vendor.
MessageGears also supports both .NET and Java SDKs, eliminating the need to write web services code. This also provides access to Amazon's S3 and SQS services to make it easy to exchange files with MessageGears.
Integrations + partners
How MessageGears fits into your stack
What does MessageGears integrate with?
MessageGears fits into modern marketing and data stacks without forcing data duplication. Every integration runs against the data sources you already trust. No copies, no sync windows, no parallel pipelines for engineering to maintain. Native integrations and partnerships include (but are not limited to):
- Data warehouses: Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift, queried directly with no ingestion step.
- Personalization and content partners: Movable Ink, Jacquard, Bynder, Smartling.
- External destinations: Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, Microsoft Ads, and many more.
Can I use my existing tools like Movable Ink, Smartling, or Jacquard?
Yes. MessageGears partners directly with leading personalization, localization, and content optimization tools, including Movable Ink (real-time creative personalization), Smartling (translation and localization), and Jacquard (AI-generated copy). These are preferred partners that work with MessageGears templates and personalization workflows out of the box.
Do I still need a separate CDP?
For most brands, no. The segmentation features in the core MessageGears platform eliminate the need for a separate CDP, reducing costs and data copies. Many customers use MessageGears to consolidate or replace standalone CDP spend, particularly when the CDP is primarily used to feed audiences to marketing channels.
If you have an existing CDP, MessageGears can also work alongside it.
Implementation + migration
Getting up and running
How long does it take to implement MessageGears?
A proof of concept can be live in roughly four weeks, and full migration deployments routinely happen in weeks rather than the multi-quarter timelines required by traditional enterprise marketing clouds. There is no painful schema refitting, no customer data to ingest, and no duplicate pipeline to build. MessageGears reads your warehouse the way it already exists.
Every customer gets a dedicated implementation manager, customer success manager, solutions engineer, and deliverability manager throughout onboarding, so the lift on internal IT and data teams stays as light as possible.
Will marketing need IT involvement for every audience change?
No. Upon initial data connection, our recommended best practice is for the IT team to build 2-3 base segments in partnership with marketing to promote information sharing and cross-functional understanding. Marketing teams can build new segments, add new attributes, launch journeys, and personalize content without filing ongoing data requests. Because every column in every warehouse table is already available, the typical “wait two weeks for a new field” cycle goes away. Data and IT keep governance through warehouse-native permissioning (role-based access, row-level security, masking), while marketing gets self-serve activation against approved data.
Can I migrate from Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Braze, Adobe, or another platform?
Yes. MessageGears regularly migrates enterprise customers off Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Braze, Iterable, MoEngage, Attentive, Adobe, and legacy systems like Unica and Acoustic. The professional services team can handle rebuilding templates, mapping orchestration logic into new journeys, and managing IP warming so deliverability is preserved through the cutover.
Many brands take a phased approach, running MessageGears alongside their existing platform on a subset of programs before scaling up the full footprint. This allows for the immediate benefits of direct data access without a rip-and-replace migration.
Will switching disrupt my email deliverability?
A dedicated deliverability team manages IP warming, sender reputation, and authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) throughout the transition. Customers can also run MessageGears in parallel with their existing platform during the ramp-up period to minimize risk to active programs. The MessageGears team can provide tailored guidance along the way.
Pricing + ROI
What it costs and what brands save
How is MessageGears priced?
MessageGears prices using a straightforward platform fee plus volume-based charges. White-glove support, a dedicated CSM, and core platform capabilities are included, there are no separate fees for additional data fields, data storage, SDK usage, or warehouse credits.
For a tailored quote, request a demo and the team will scope pricing based on your MAUs, channels, and use cases.
Are there fees if I need to add more data fields?
No. MessageGears doesn't charge warehouse credits for your data usage. Because data stays in your existing environment, you also avoid duplicate storage and egress costs that stack up on platforms requiring full data ingestion. Customers consolidating onto MessageGears typically see 20-60% savings on software costs and a roughly 50% reduction in IT resources spent on marketing data infrastructure.
What ROI have customers seen?
Headline numbers from public case studies and a Forrester Total Economic Impact analysis include:
- 413% ROI, Forrester TEI study across the analyzed MessageGears customer set.
- 24x faster campaign deployment for teams replacing legacy stacks.
- 30M+ messages personalized per hour and 1B+ messages sent per month is a real customer example of the volume supported.
- 70% higher conversion rates from a client using direct Snowflake activation.
- 20-60% software savings, 50% reduction in IT resource spend, and a 45% subscriber increase reported by customers consolidating onto MessageGears.
Security + compliance
Data governance and certifications
What security and compliance certifications does MessageGears hold?
MessageGears maintains SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, and CCPA compliance, with additional controls available for regulated industries. Because customer data stays in your warehouse and can remain behind your firewall, MessageGears materially reduces the third-party data footprint that needs to be audited, secured, and governed.
How does MessageGears handle PII?
Personally identifiable information stays in your data warehouse. MessageGears queries the warehouse at the time of segmentation, send, or personalization, so PII does not need to be persisted in a separate vendor environment for routine activation. This architecture is part of why MessageGears is well suited to brands with strict compliance, residency, or data minimization requirements.
Who controls access to my data?
You do. Because MessageGears connects through your own database’s authentication and permissioning model, you can apply database-level access controls, including row-level security, masking, and role-based permissions, to govern exactly what marketers can see and activate. This allows data and IT leaders to give marketing teams self-serve activation without giving up governance.
How MessageGears compares
MessageGears vs. other platforms
How is MessageGears different from Salesforce Marketing Cloud?
The core architectural difference is data movement. Salesforce Marketing Cloud requires customer data to be copied into Salesforce environments and stitched across multiple modules (Engagement, Mobile Studio, Data Cloud, Personalization, Intelligence). MessageGears keeps data in your warehouse and activates it from there across both owned and third-party channels, in one unified platform.
Practically, this means faster implementation, no per-module integration work, no scheduled sync windows, and predictable pricing that doesn't scale with every little add-on. MessageGears also natively supports email, SMS, push, and in-app, in a single platform, channels that often require separate Salesforce SKUs.
How is MessageGears different from Braze?
Braze is a customer engagement platform built around its own customer database, meaning brands sync customer data into Braze, where it lives alongside campaign execution. MessageGears reads directly from your warehouse, so there is no sync window, no field cap, and no duplicate data store to manage or pay for.
For brands with large transactional or behavioral datasets, the map and sync model of an ingestion-based platform can become a bottleneck in terms of budget, resources, and latency. MessageGears removes those bottlenecks by directly activating the warehouse tables in-place. Email infrastructure is also owned end-to-end by MessageGears rather than delivered through a third-party.
How is MessageGears different from Iterable?
Iterable is a cross-channel engagement platform that ingests customer data into its own environment for segmentation and activation. MessageGears keeps data in the warehouse and is purpose-built for enterprise scale and complexity, with owned email infrastructure, FreeMarker-based personalization, sophisticated journey orchestration, and broader SDK coverage for OTT and emerging channels.
How is MessageGears different from Attentive?
Attentive is an SMS-first engagement platform optimized for retail and e-commerce. MessageGears is a multi-channel, data-native platform built for enterprise complexity and security across industries. Attentive requires customer data to be moved into its environment; MessageGears activates data directly from your warehouse and offers owned email infrastructure plus SMS, push, in-app, web, and reverse ETL to your external tools.
How is MessageGears different from MoEngage?
MoEngage is a mobile-first engagement platform that requires customer data to be synced into the platform for activation. MessageGears connects directly to your warehouse, supports unlimited fields and live attributes, provides owned enterprise email infrastructure, and is purpose-built for the data volumes and orchestration complexity of large global brands.
How is MessageGears different from Hightouch?
Hightouch is a reverse-ETL and composable CDP layer that ships warehouse data out to other tools. It is a pipeline, not an end-to-end engagement platform with native channel deployment capabilities. Brands typically pair Hightouch with a separate ESP, mobile vendor, and/or orchestration tool. MessageGears delivers warehouse-native segmentation and reverse ETL activation and end-to-end messaging across email, SMS, push, in-app, web, and OTT, with real-time access rather than scheduled syncs.
